Official Mexican Standards (NOM) for Commercial Information and their impact on the sale of products
Mexican Official Standards (NOMs) are key regulations issued by the Mexican government that ensure the quality, safety, and accuracy of product information in the national market. Issued by institutions such as the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Health, these standards protect the health and well-being of consumers.
What do the NOMs for Commercial Information cover?
- 1-Labeling: These regulations govern the content and format of labels, including ingredients, net content, and instructions for use. Example: NOM-004-SE-2021 for textile products
- 2-Nutritional Information: They require adequate labeling for processed foods, such as NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, which includes the famous black hexagons.
- 3-Specific Restrictions: Some standards, such as NOM-015-SCFl-2007 for toys, establish warnings if they contain small parts.
Impact on product sales
Failure to comply with NOMs can lead to:
- Retention of goods in customs.
- Economic fines.
- Marketing ban in severe cases.
